Frequently asked questions
What is the SARS AEO programme?
The Authorised Economic Operator programme is SARS's accreditation for trusted traders, aligned with World Customs Organization standards (it replaced the old Preferred Trader programme). Accredited operators get tangible operational benefits — fewer inspections, faster processing, reduced security amounts and a dedicated Client Relationship Manager. Status runs for 5 years, applied for electronically via eFiling.
What is the difference between AEO Level 1 and Level 2?
Level 1 is compliance accreditation — built on your customs compliance record, record-keeping and financial solvency. Level 2 adds safety-and-security accreditation: physical site security, cargo integrity, personnel and IT security. Level 2 includes all Level 1 benefits plus extras like expedited refunds and drawbacks, exemption from certain supervisions and coordination of other-agency interventions.
Who can apply for AEO status in South Africa?
Any registered or licensed customs client — importers, exporters, clearing agents/brokers, warehouse and terminal operators, carriers and forwarders. You need an established compliance track record; a brand-new importer should build clean history first.
What are the benefits of AEO accreditation?
Level 1: a dedicated Client Relationship Manager at SARS, reduced security/surety amounts, fewer documentary and physical inspections, expedited processing, inspection at your own premises, use of the AEO logo, and mutual-recognition benefits with partner customs administrations. Level 2 adds expedited refunds and drawbacks, exemptions from certain customs supervision and no charges for special attendance.
