Frequently asked questions

What is an HS code?

An HS (Harmonised System) code is the international tariff classification number SARS uses to decide the customs duty, VAT and import rules for your product. South Africa uses an 8-digit version based on the global 6-digit Harmonised System. Getting the code right is the single most important step in clearing an import — the wrong code means the wrong duty, penalties and delays.

How do I find the HS code for my product?

Search this page by product name or by the first digits of a code. Each code page shows the heading description, the indicative general customs duty, a worked landed-cost example and whether the product faces anti-dumping duty or needs an ITAC import permit. Always confirm the exact 8-digit line in the SARS Tariff Book before you import.

How much import duty will I pay in South Africa?

Landed cost = your goods value + customs duty (set by the HS code) + 15% import VAT, charged on the Added Tax Value (customs value uplifted 10% for non-SACU imports, plus all duties). Some products also carry anti-dumping or safeguard duties. Use the duty figure on each code page, then our Duty & VAT Calculator for the full landed cost.

Are these duty rates official?

The rates here are indicative general (MFN) ordinary customs duties drawn from the public SARS Tariff Book. Real rates can differ at 8-digit level, under trade agreements (SADC, EU-EPA) and by Government Gazette amendment. This is guidance, not a tariff determination under Section 47(9) of the Customs & Excise Act — verify the current Tariff Book before ordering.
