Why this page exists

The photographs at the top of our news articles are used under open licences — mostly Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) and Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA), with some in the public domain. The attribution licences require us to name the photographer, state the licence and link back to the original.

Those licences let that credit be given in a way that suits the medium. We give it here, in one register, rather than printing a photographer's name under every image — our article pages deliberately carry no credit or source line beneath the text. Every image below links to its original page, where the full licence terms and the photographer's own description are available.

If you are the photographer of an image listed here and something is wrong — a misspelled name, the wrong licence, or a credit you would like worded differently — please contact us and we will correct it.

• CC BY-SA — as above, and derivative works must carry the same licence.
• CC0 / Public domain — no rights reserved; credit is given below as a courtesy, not an obligation.

A small number of older images pre-date this register. Where we cannot establish an image's provenance with confidence we remove it rather than guess at a credit. Illustrations, diagrams, screenshots of our own tools, and the Trade Caravan and Realview marks are our own work and need no third-party attribution.
