Consignee

Supply Chain & Logistics Glossary — South Africa

Definition

The party named on a transport document as the receiver of the goods — usually the buyer or their nominated agent. On an ocean bill of lading the consignee (or the holder, if consigned to order) controls delivery of the cargo, so banks are often named consignee under letters of credit until payment is secured. Getting the consignee details exactly right matters: amending a bill of lading after sailing costs time and fees.
