RoRo (Roll-on Roll-off)

Supply Chain & Logistics Glossary — South Africa

Definition

A vessel type and shipping method where wheeled cargo — cars, trucks, buses, trailers and machinery on low-beds — is driven on and off the ship over ramps instead of being lifted aboard in containers. It is the standard mode for vehicle imports and exports; Durban and Port Elizabeth handle South Africa's main RoRo traffic, serving the local motor industry's export programmes. Cargo that can't be driven can often still ship RoRo on a mafi trailer.
