Shipper (Consignor)

Supply Chain & Logistics Glossary — South Africa

Definition

The party who sends the goods and is named as such on the transport document — typically the exporter or seller, though under EXW or FCA terms a forwarder may appear instead. The shipper contracts with the carrier (directly or via a forwarder), is responsible for accurate cargo declarations such as the verified gross mass, and carries liability for misdeclared dangerous goods. Consignor is simply the formal synonym used in transport law.
