What documents do I need to import goods into South Africa?
Core import documents are the Bill of Lading or Airway Bill, Commercial Invoice, Packing List, the SARS Bill of Entry (SAD 500), a Certificate of Origin and a clearing & forwarding mandate. Sea, air and road freight each add mode-specific documents, and food, chemicals, vehicles and plants require extra permits or certificates.
Do I need a Certificate of Origin to import into South Africa?
A Certificate of Origin is required to claim preferential (reduced) duty rates under a trade agreement such as SADC, AfCFTA or the SA-EU agreement. Without it, SARS applies the general duty rate. For goods originating in SADC countries moving by road, a SADC Certificate of Origin (Form CI) is used.
What export documents are required from South Africa?
A typical ZA export needs a Commercial Invoice, Packing List, the SARS Export Bill of Entry (SAD 500, required above R100,000), and a Certificate of Origin from a Chamber of Commerce. Controlled goods such as scrap metal, diamonds and firearms need an export permit, and hazardous or food products need additional declarations and health certificates.
