Import Permit

Supply Chain & Logistics Glossary — South Africa

Definition

Official permission required before certain controlled goods may be imported into South Africa, issued mainly by ITAC under the International Trade Administration Act. Controlled categories include used and second-hand goods (notably used vehicles and machinery), certain chemicals, tyres and various agricultural products; other authorities issue permits for their domains, such as health or agriculture. The permit must be in place before shipment — goods arriving without one can be seized, and clearing agents cannot fix it after the fact.
